Denne Neighbourhood Council
Tree Warden
Article written by Michael McCabe, Tree Warden to Denne Neighbourhood Council

In 1990 the Tree Council launched the Tree Warden scheme for volunteers who have a particular
interest in trees to support parish and neighbourhood councils in the maintenance and enhancement of
their tree cover.  A central aim of the scheme was to raise the consciousness of the community to the
amenity value of their tree cover and the need for its preservation.  I have been fortunate enough to
have been appointed tree warden to The Denne Neighbourhood Council, with its rich and varied legacy
of trees from past estate owners.  I hope to provide a link between the public, the Neighbourhood
Council and the tree officers of HDC.

I regularly monitor the trees in the neighbourhood for damage, disease,m vandalism and threats to their
existence (eg from building developments).  Of particular concern are protected trees and conservation
areas where work on the trees is formally authorised and meets certain criteria, so as to maintain that
amenity value.  I trust my special interest in trees will enable me to find answers to most tree problems
and I will be delighted to help tree owners who want work carried out, or to legally protect, their trees,
and members of the public who have concerns about the trees in their neighbourhood.  I can be
contacted on 01403 263383.

It is expected that this year I shall be able to conduct tree walks for local groups such as scouts or
school classes, identifying trees and discussing their essential contribution to ourselves and the world
we live in.
TREE WALKS

During the summer months we shall be able to offer Tree Walks in Horsham Park, led by a tree warden.  The object
will be to give guidance and spark interest in tree identification and, incidentally, to touch on the benefits and the
role of trees in the environment and to wildlife.  There is the added attraction of spending an hour in the fresh air
and very pleasant surroundings!

It is expected that the walks might attract the interest of societies such as Rotary or Probus, as well as youth
organisations (scouts or school groups).  The size of the group should be between 10 and 30 ideally, and dates and
times can be by arrangement with Denne Neighbourhood Council.

This year's "Tree Stories" walks in Horsham Park will begin when the broadleaf trees come into leaf in May, and this
year there will be evening walks on Wednesday evenings, followed the next day, Thursday, by the daytime walks.
The dates for May and June 2011 will be:

18 May, Wednesday at 7.30pm

19 May, Thursday at 11am

22 June, Wednesday at 7.30pm

23 June, Thursday at 11am

In all cases the walk will start at the Horsham Park band podium and last up to 1½ hrs.
